Fairwell to St Martin (1993)
It was a perfect sailing day -- calm
sea and fair wind under a sunny sky. Cotton
candy clouds marked our destination beyond the horizon;
we were reaching for BVI on a perfect rhumbline.
But this idyllic picture betrayed the ferocious
wind and 14' waves that we battled
on the way to St. Martin. I had to
make much offerings to the
sea god -- from the
bottom of my
stomach.
